Two blogs have picked up on a common theme: the international peace movement is thus far silent over the Russio-Georgian War.
Charlie Foxtrot has this to say:
“Remember all those breathless, and wholly incorrect, charges leveled at the U.S. at numerous "peace" protests concerning the war in Iraq? Well now all those charges are *actually* happening in South Ossetia.....so where are the calls for vast marches on the National Mall, or in Paris or Berlin, to protest this *actual* imperialist aggression?? Nowhere to be seen....”
‘Everybody Has An Opinion’ looks for reason with this:
…when it is clear it is an imperialistic grab for territory and resources, when it is clear innocent civilians are being killed, when it is clear it is about oil, why no protests???
Could it be the anti-war protesters' operational principle is "I am against war only if America is involved??????”
EHAO comes close to nailing it.
Why are there no major protests over the Russio-Georgian War? There are two reasons: the international peace movement is corrupt and they see no gain in it.
The international peace movement is actually a socialist movement. Their real strategy is to weaken western (American) power. If they truly stood for peace, they would be in the streets with the same force they protested the Iraqi War. Their cause is corrupted through their associations with their old Soviet masters. In my article “The Coming Darkness: An Analysis of the Left” I say this:
Once a movement has crossed the Phase Five threshold, the final stage is close behind... Phase Six is Corruption- when the power brokers have completely compromised a movement and power itself becomes the new cause.
The KGB most likely held the reigns on many of these organizations all the way through early 1990s and their influence can still be felt today. They won’t use the war to bludgeon their old benefactor. Its not about peace, it’s now about power.
They see no gain protesting this war. Leftist movements have three goals: acquire power, expand power, and defend power. They use a simple formula to attain these goals.
All leftist movements are built on two elements. The first element is the crisis. The crisis is a victim class, a disaster (imminent or occurring), or both. The second element is the grievance. The grievance is always targeted at a villain, who by action or inaction is responsible for the crisis. The crisis is an excuse to file the grievance. The grievance serves two purposes. It’s is a lighting rod to manipulate the movement’s faithful - a conduit to channel hate, anger or guilt. It also serves to punish the villain. Built on fear and envy, these movements are never for something, but always against something.
The Russians are the villains, the invasion is the crisis, and the victims are the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. Its all legitimate, but useless to the peace movement. The grievance won’t further their power.
The purpose of punishing the villain is to strip him of his wealth, power and resources. It requires the villain adhere to a rule of law. The Russians, being a thugocracy, don’t bend to international law or public opinion. The weapons of the left don’t work on the left. The peace movement can’t use this crisis to gain or expand its power.
To summarize, the Russians are an old ally of the peace movement, they are immune to the peace movement’s tactics, and there is nothing to be gained by protesting the Russians. This is why you aren’t seeing protests on the scale of those against the Iraq War in 2003.
What will the peace movement’s excuse be if pressed on this question by the media? They will say the suddenness of the invasion caught them off guard.
